Rodrigo Duterte faces ICC charges of crimes against Humanity

March 13, 2025, the Wall Street Journal reported former Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte has been flown to the International Criminal Court (ICC) in the Hague to face charges of crimes against humanity. This stems from his tenure in office whereby he initiated a de facto vigilante war on drugs. Duterte encouraged the civilian population to shoot anyone who is dealing, using, or suspected of drug dealing in an effort to eliminate drug use in the Philippines. A binge of gun violence ensued, and without due process, many innocent or low level users were killed, as sanctioned by his regime. For those not affected by the violence, the vigilante approach was said to have been very popular among Filipinos.
